Are you familiar with osteoarthritis? A couple other common names for it are degenerative joint disease and degenerative arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of the bones wears down. The tissue at the end of the bone is there in order to act as a cushion between bones, and provide a smooth surface for it to rotate on.  As time goes on, the tissue at the end of the bone will degenerate more and more, causing discomfort and restricted mobility. Eventually, the bone-on-bone contact can lead to the bones breaking down and bone spurs.

Unfortunately, osteoarthritis affects the lives of about 27 million Americans. Osteoarthritis can occur to any joint, but it is most commonly experienced in the knees, hips, lower back, neck, fingers, and toes. Although it cannot be cured, it can be treated effectively. Chiropractic care is one of the best solutions for someone suffering from osteoarthritis.

A study was done on a 70-year-old woman who suffered from hip osteoarthritis, poor balance, and a history of falls. The study consisted of hip and spinal manipulation, mobilization, and passive stretching. For those unfamiliar with chiropractic care, these are a few common techniques used in a chiropractic session.

The patient received care 16 times over a 12-week period and, as a result, she noticed a huge increase in range of motion, improved balance and gait speed, and reduced disability symptoms! This test had tremendous benefits on a 70-year-old woman, so don’t think it’s ever too late to treat your osteoarthritis!
